Refugee Welcome

WAY TO GO BROOKSIDE!

Because of your generosity, we're able to provide four refugee families with a warm welcome to our city. Together, you supplied furniture, household good and toys for families who have been displaced. Want to help set up their home? You can help move furniture, stock cupboards and grocery shop.

Help Set Up A Home

Help us welcome refugees to our city.

Imagine being displaced from your home country with no time to pack, plan or learn a new language and culture. Currently, there are 54,000 Afghanistan refugees being processed in military bases across the United States. Omaha is expecting to receive approximately 500 of them, along with other refugees that are consistently being resettled here from other countries. Most of them only have the clothes they're wearing. At Brookside, we know that All People Matter To God. It's one of our core values.

So, Brookside is working in conjunction with Lutheran Family Services to provide these families a welcoming home. We'll be setting up a BRAND NEW household for 4 refugee families (we can't take used items - sorry!). Help us supply them with everything they need - from furniture to laundry soap, from sheets and towels to toys for the kids.

If you want to find out more and get more perspective on what these families face, check out this video with Sher Jan Ahmadzai, the Director of the Center of Afghanistan Studies at University of Nebraska, Omaha.

ways to continue to participate:

donate towards furniture

Refugee families come to the United States with nothing. Although or initiative has ended, we're continuing to take donations to help fill in a few things we might need based on the family size or if the family has a baby. If you'd like to still participate and help us buy everything NEW that they will need to get started - from beds, to a couch, rugs and a kitchen table, you can give by clicking the link below. Sorry! we can't take used items. Your gift is tax deductible.

we can't take Used items

Brookside is unable to accept used furniture, mattresses or clothes for the refugee families. But our partners at Lutheran Family Services can. Click on the button below to find out more about dropping them off.

other ways to get involved

Help move furniture, set their new homes up, greet at the airport or be an advocate that walks with the family for the first few months. Find out more from Lutheran Family Services website. (Note any role that has direct contact with the families requires training and background checks.) To join other Brooksiders, enter the join code "11607" when setting up your volunteer account.
